Oh shit. I didn't know she was married to Stephens. Surprised they divorced. They seem made for each other.

This made sense, with distinction.

Paul wrote a piece earlier this year that opens with a description of someone yelling at her and her son to wear masks while they were riding their bikes during the pandemic, which was very convenient for the point she wanted to make in a way that made it sound not true.

Thank you, Sarah. I’ve been reading you for years and have (obviously) enjoyed your writing, but this feels like it freed something in me. I’m so tired of basic protest for basic human rights being reframed by the right as gross entitlement and virtue signaling. And the left has wrestled that stupid framing from the right for the past ten years and apply it with glee when it serves them. Few phrases in the English language are as dastardly as “virtue signaling.” I myself wrote an (unpublished) piece about the use of that term when trying to protest racism (another gross violation of basic human rights), and how fellow members of left were so happy to paste it on me.

Thanks for reminding us that having a shred of human feeling isn’t superhuman, it’s fuckjng normal. And yes I agree that going to college is training young people to kill, in whatever way.

Columbia saw what happened to the (other female) presidents of those big schools and decided militarism would be a safe response. Oy.

Sorry for so many words. Thanks for writing.

When you’re that untalented but the heads of the NYTimes give you a column because, “it’s your turn or whatever,” I suppose your only way to carve out a readership is to be the left-of-center TERF.

This comment slipped away before I finished it. . . . ."Palestinian truth," there will never be a chance for a solution other than bombing one another.

Well I think the phrase bombing each other fails to reflect the much larger amount of bombing done by one party

What about annihilate? I agree bombing is not the right word for what I meant.

I love your writing and think you're a fantastic storyteller, Sarah, but this piece fucking broke my heart. You've presented this conflict as a reductive, good-vs-evil polemic and it's just ... not.

Yes, what Israel is doing is awful and indefensible. AND, and: Hamas is a terrorist group that uses its own Palestinian people as a weapon to fight jihad against Jews' right to exist in Israel. None of this is going to end until we -- and the rest of the world -- can recognize both of those facts.

If you're going to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, why not call for the release of innocent Israeli hostages?

If you're going to accuse Israel of genocide, why not mention that Hamas' 1988 charter explicitly calls for the killing of Jews and the destruction of the Jewish state?

If you're going to applaud the Columbia students for trying to "stop the slaughter and starvation of thousands of people", maybe mention that for decades, Hamas has diverted millions in foreign aid money to build tunnels and headquarters under schools and hospitals, making human shields out of its own people?

If you're going to link to a ridiculous article in the Daily Express UK (srsly?) to make your point about Israel as an oppressor, why not link to the BBC story about Hamas raping Israeli women on October 7?

Are you only reading Pamela Paul, or have you bothered to check out any of Tom Friedman's recent columns? I'm not one of those Jews who's allergic to criticizing Israel, and accuses anyone who does of anti-semitism, but wow: your train of thought in this piece really terrifies me.

You can’t slaughter tens of thousands of innocent women and children inside an open air apartheid prison of occupation where all food and water is controlled by the Israeli government and cry - but Hamas - but the hostages. It’s a false equivalency of ignorant proportions. Have you asked yourself why the ICC is considering charging Netanyahu with war crimes? They are an international governing body called the International Criminal Court with the expertise to understand the true reality of the situation in detail - how is it you feel your complaints are superior to theirs?

Tom Friedman is terrible but even he has recently said that Hamas needs to be part of a future Palestinian state. Someone call the NYPD!

Who wrote the following: "This is a struggle between the children of light and the children of darkness, between humanity and the law of the jungle."

Since you seem consumed by murderous Israeli hasbara: Not this substack! The official Israeli PM twitter account wrote it less than a day before the IDF bombed Ahli al-Arabi hospital in Gaza, killing hundreds of Palestinians. If you read that and can't understand that it's the Zionist entity — not Sarah — who holds full responsibility for reducing this "conflict" to good-vs-evil, writing in blood for 6 brutal months that "good" = genocidaire, then idk bro, welcome home I guess.

There are people who see the equation, like Sarah, like the students at Columbia, and rightly disavow the move that tries to make one question standing against genocide. It's far too late now, but maybe one day you will too.

You've changed my mind. I'm pro genocide now.

Nation states, *especially* apartheid ethnostates, don't actually have a right to exist, though?

And half your claims against Hamas have been repeatedly debunked. Nice try!
