Gerri's Boots & More: Succession Fashion Observations
Necklaces everywhere, ties on one side, Rava so basic
This post is probably for dedicated Succession watchers only.*
“Gerri's Boots & More: Succession Fashion Observations"
(Featuring Lauren Sherman)
Lauren and I know each other from Lucky (RIP). She’s now a reporter at the Business of Fashion and has a TinyLetter. My credentials are — I wear clothes?
LET’S START WITH GERRI’S BOOTS (and more)
Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) was wearing high suede boots that didn’t match her outfit. Since everyone was on a yacht right before this episode begins, Gerri's boots gave me the vibe they were the only thing she brought on the yacht trip that were not sandals, but then, why those? Her purse matched the boots, color-wise, but not vibe or texture-wise. Was it possible she bought them at the same time and didn’t think about what they’d look like together, Lauren wondered. Also are boots Stuart Weitzman? Gerri’s suit has a very nice drape, possibly just a flattering cut, possibly to point to her “soft power.” (see the word power over her head in the above screenshot!) She is the type of person who would buy stuff from one of those “secret” clothing designers who sell their stuff through MLMs — like Nina McLemore.
The tie or no tie thing was very specific in this episode. Frank (Peter Friedman) is the only one on Logan’s side wearing a tie. Lots of navy on the men. Hugo (Fisher Stevens) very noticeably tieless, looks very casual, he is a particularly soulless character, open about it, blank except for being a bad person, the clothes possibly related? Toward the end of the episode we get a view of his colorful socks.
This is a bad photo sorry. If you look closely you can see weird socks.
The necklace work is very complex, no surprise since the necklace is the jewelry item of the moment. Lisa, the lawyer, a new character played by the always perfect Sanaa Lathan was in strands of fresh water pearls on a chain. “Sanaa’s necklace is major,” Lauren said. It was especially so in contrast to most of the dainty little things most everyone else is wearing, except Siobhan (Sarah Snook) who wears a short chain with big links, and as for Gerri, hers seemed somewhat similar but longer, with a smaller link, but was hard to get a good look at.
All the women were wearing necklaces except for the PR women Kendall hires, who, Lauren pointed out, dress way way better than most “tough ass comms people for rich companies... if only they dressed this well!”
NO-NECKLACE PUBLIC RELATIONS, INC.
Connor’s (Alan Ruck) girlfriend, Willa (Justin Lupe), was the only one who wore lots of necklaces.
Our favorite necklace was within the same genre of most of the others, a subtle pendant on a chain, but cooler, worn by Jess Jordan (Juliana Canfield). Lauren thought it might be Cartier. It was a loop/pearl thing, an enviable object, can’t get a good screengrab of it.
RAVA - BASIC BITCH/GODDESS
We were both struck by Rava’s (Natalie Gold) at-home look. It was so dead-on, all very simple basic-bitch-with-money look, Lauren said, and I thought she kind of looked like a rich person that works at a non-profit In New York for semi-fun, doesn’t need that 46K, which is the same thing more or less as what Lauren said. She is wearing what seems to be a platinum or white gold diamond solitaire necklace, sooo David Yurmany, which is the basic bitch necklace, a necklace that says, at least to me, “I am on my own but I can get a man any time I want.” I asked Lauren how Rava had ever married Kendall. She said, “College.”
WE BOTH SAID “NANTUCKET REDS LOL”
Other observations: Naomi Pierce (Annabelle Dexter-Jones) had a great look, “Naomi’s look feels most realistic and i like it v much,” said Lauren, of NP’s gold belt buckle, high-waisted jeans, gold buttons on a military-style jacket. Tom’s (Matthew Macfayden)Nantucket Reds were hilarious. Lauren described Willa’s look — Reformation-esque dress, necklace stack, high-heeled short boots, as “very pre-Covid.” Lauren, yes. We are going to do this again!
